Unicef has named Bangladesh, Peru, Vietnam and the Philippines in a report styled "Covid-19 Vaccine Success Stories", noting that Bangladesh's vaccination rate has risen sharply. The report praised the efforts of the country's volunteers in bringing a large population under vaccination coverage. Bangladesh has advanced eight notches to fifth position out of 121 countries across the globe on Nikkei's Covid-19 Recovery Index, a growing acknowledgement to the prudent leadership put in display by Honourable Prime Minister (HPM) Sheikh Hasina. Meanwhile, a plan is underway to conduct a special campaign this month to inoculate around five crore people, aged 18 and above, who have received their second dose of Covid-19 vaccines at least four months ago.
At the directives of HPM Sheikh Hasina, the Awami League led government has decided to provide essentials at a subsidised rate to 10 million families through "family cards" from June 1, aiming to offer them with some relief amid a rise in prices due to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Earlier, to ease public sufferings in the wake of the Covid induced shutdown, the government issued the card to 8.8 million low-income families across the country while the remaining 1.2 million families will be getting their cards within this month.
The 42nd anniversary of the ruling Awami League President and HPM Sheikh Hasina’s homecoming from exile is being observed across Bangladesh on May 17, 2022. On this day in 1981, Sheikh Hasina returned home from India after nearly six years in exile following the assassination of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members by a cabal of army officers on August 15, 1975. Marking the day, the Bangladesh premier reiterated that she returned home with only a goal to bring smiles on the faces of the country's people. "I returned home to bring smiles on the people's faces, because, it was my father's (Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman) dream," she added.
The government is going to give priority to the mechanization of the agriculture sector in the budget for the next fiscal, 2022-23, a move aimed at increasing employment and internal investment by giving focus on domestic industries. Several media reports also showed the new budget has given special emphasis on increasing food production as well as increasing employment and investment. To this end, a proposal has been prepared to modernize agriculture, increase irrigation and seed incentives, rehabilitate agriculture and continue fertilizer subsidy with special attention being placed to rural development to create massive employment.
Owing to successful labour diplomacy spearheaded by HPM sheikh Hasina led government, nearly 8,00,000 migrant workers went abroad in the first 10 months of the current fiscal year, comfortably exceeding the numbers a year ago, a development that bodes well for Bangladesh as it could pave the way for higher remittance earnings. An increased flow of money transfer from the migrant workers will be key in the coming months. In a related encouraging development, Bangladesh has secured 7th rank in terms of highest recipient of remittance from abroad in 2021, says the World Bank report on migration and development published this week.
