Bangladesh made a strong economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic and progressed in reducing poverty, says the World Bank in its twice-year-update on Bangladesh. The global lender said reforms to address inflation through monetary and fiscal policies as well as financial sector vulnerabilities will be critical for the country to sustain growth and reduce poverty. The update titled “Bangladesh Development Update: New Frontiers in Poverty Reduction” was released at the World Bank’s Dhaka office. Prudent macroeconomic policies helped Bangladesh navigate the Covid-19 pandemic with a rapid recovery in growth in FY21 and FY22. As a result, Bangladesh has been among the fastest growing economies in the world over the past decade,” he mentioned.
Bangladesh officially received the first batch of uranium for its Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) to become the 33rd nuclear power-producing country in the world. The dream project’s Russian contractor, Rosatom, handed over the radioactive fuel to the RNPP authority at a formal “Graduation Ceremony,” a milestone event joined virtually by Honourable Prime Minister (HPM) Sheikh Hasina and Russia’s Honourable President Vladimir Putin from Ganabhaban and Kremlin respectively. Rosatom, as a Russian contractor, has been engaged in building the 2,400MW Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant with two units, each having the capacity of producing 1,200MW electricity. Once the nuclear fuel is loaded into the power plant's reactors, power can be produced for one year. After that, the fuel will have to be reloaded into the reactor. Russia’s Honourable President Vladimir Putin said this plant would remain as a symbol of strong bilateral ties between Dhaka and Moscow.
Japan has said it will continue to make concrete efforts, like terminal 3 of Dhaka airport, that contribute to strengthening connectivity for the sake of peace, stability and prosperity of the region and the international community. “Located at the nexus of Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent, Bangladesh is an important partner in realising the Free and Open Indo-Pacific,” Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Komura Masahiro said. In recent years, under the Bay of Bengal Industrial Growth Belt Initiative, Japan has been actively engaged in the development of major infrastructure to enhance regional connectivity, including Dhaka metro rail, Matarbari deep sea port, and Dhaka airport’s terminal 3.
Country's RMG exports witnessed a healthy growth of 14.46% in September this year totaling $3.61 billion up from $3.16 billion registered in the same month last year. According to the latest statistics of the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), Bangladesh's apparel export earnings reached $11.61 billion during this July-September period of FY24 having a growth of 13.07% compared to the same period of FY23. During this three-month period, the export earnings from the knitwear sector were $6.76 billion while the export earnings from woven garments reached $4.85 billion. The EPB statistics showed that export earnings from both knitwear and woven sectors increased by 19.70% and 4.97% respectively.
HPM Sheikh Hasina has said that an elected government will take over power from the elected government and now the right to vote is in the hands of the people. "The right to vote is now in the hands of the people. The government will be formed by the people who would vote for them," she said. She added: "So, now there is no way to go back. Now, our constitution also secures the people's voting right. An elected government will come (to power) in place of the elected government." HPM Sheikh Hasina, also the President of ruling Awami League (AL), made this remarks in an interview with the Bangla service of Voice of America (VoA) aired on Saturday, replying to a query regarding the demand of BNP for elections under a caretaker government (CG).

HPM Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh would be an international aviation hub as she made "soft opening" of the third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA)."Bangladesh's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport or Cox's Bazar International Airport will be the international aviation hub for its geographical location," she said while partially inaugurating the terminal unveiling a plaque at a HSIA function. The premier said once Hong Kong was the international aviation hub and Singapore later replaced Hong Kong and now Dubai has become the new aviation hub. "I believe Bangladesh will be the international aviation hub as it is in between air routes of the East and the West. The global airlines will land either at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport or Cox's Bazar International Airport for refueling," she said.
