The recent visit to China by Honourbale Prime Minister (HPM) Sheikh Hasina has reportedly infused a raft of gains and marked a new elevation in the ties between the countries. As many as 21 cooperation documents including memoranda of understanding (MoU) have been signed during a summit on trade, business, and investment opportunities between Bangladesh and China in Beijing (9 July). The honourbale Chinese president Xi Jinping assured HPM Sheikh Hasina of continued support for Bangladesh’s journey towards development. At a meeting with Bangladesh counterpart, honourbale Chinese Premier Li Qiang has announced economic assistance for Bangladesh. HPM Sheikh Hasina has called upon Chinese entrepreneurs to invest in Bangladesh, emphasising the potential for achieving significant progress through collaborative efforts between the two nations.
According to the provisional data released by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, Bangladesh's economy posted 6.12% growth in the third quarter (January-March) of the recently concluded fiscal year, driven by sizeable growth across sectors – agriculture, industry and service. In between January and March quarter, growth in the industrial sector, which accounts for around 33% of the GDP, jumped to about 7.03%, the agriculture sector increased to 5.46% while services sector increased to 4.97%. This rise stands as another marker of a steady rise of the country’s economy under the able leadership of HPM Sheikh Hasina.
HPM Sheikh Hasina told the parliament that the government is mulling electricity production from hydrogen and ammonia alongside the production of solar and wind power in the country. "It is expected that it would be possible to use hydrogen energy on pilot basis in the country by 2035," she said recently, according to media reports. A cell has been formed at the Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Limited (RPGCL) under Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla) to collect the results of ongoing research and the data of the activities undertaken in the developed world over sustainable and reliable methods of producing hydrogen as energy.
According to media reports, Bangladesh got $23.92 billion in inward remittances in the recently passed financial year (FY24), with a record volume of $2.54 billion coming in June 2024, rising by 10.66% compared to the year prior. The remittance inflow rose 15.59% year-on-year to $2.542 billion in June, as migrant workers sent more money home for Eid-ul-Azha. This surge in inflow has been attributed largely to the execution of successful diplomacy opening up new destinations while introduction of skills training also played a major role.
Aiming to afeguard agricultural lands, three-crop fields, and reservoirs outlined in the Detailed Area Plan (DAP) (2022-2035), an initiative titled 'Transfer of Development Right (TDR)' has been rolled out by the government led by Awami League. Under the TDR system, landowners of agricultural areas will receive shares or permission to construct buildings in other developable parts of the city. This mechanism aims to preserve agricultural land while allowing for urban development, according to an official document.
